STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Colin Burke Tallied five goals to spark Cold Spring Harbor to a 15-5 victory over Babylon in the boys’ Class C Long Island Championship game Saturday at Stony Brook University.Cold Spring Harbor celebrates the Long Island Class C championship

The Section 8 champion Seahawks (17-1) advance to play Section 1 champ Pleasantville on Wednesday at 3:30pm at Middletown High School in the state semifinals. Pleasantville advanced with a 17-3 rout of Rondout Valley.

“This was awesome,” said Burke. “Our offense played great when we had to and our defense played awesome. The beginning of the game was a little iffy but coach (Dennis) Bonn calmed us down and we just came out and we just exploded out of halftime.”

Cold Spring Harbor used an 8-0 run to break a 2-2 first-period tie as. Matt Licciardi won 16 of 21 face-offs, Ian Laviano tallied three goals and one assist, Taylor Strough tallied two goals and one assist and Ryan Winkoff tallied one goal and three assists.

“This is a wonderful feeling,” said Bonn. “You feel good for everybody on the team. We have been fortunate to be here seven times and this is the second time we won.

“It is hard to get off the Island. I think we have that team this year that understands the last two years we came up short in the counties. I think that fueled us for this year. We didn’t look past anyone this year and we won’t look past Pleasantville.”

Brendan Watt grabbed eight saves and Jerry Brown tallied two goals and one assist for Babylon (17-2).

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Syosset scored 11 of the game’s last 12 goals and Mac O’Keefe tallied four goals and one assist to key a 14-8 victory over Smithtown East Saturday in the Class A Long Island Championship game at Stony Brook University.

Syosset (18-1), of Section 8 and the No. 4 team in the Epoch Lacrosse Rankings, will play Niskayuna in the semifinals Wednesday at 5:30 at Middletown High School. Niskayuna, the Section 2 champ, advanced with a 16-13 win over Mamaroneck.

“We came into the game knowing we had unfinished business,” said O’Keefe. “We all wanted more. It is a surreal feeling to have this win.

“Our defense is known for coming out in the third quarter and shutting teams down. We will carry this momentum into the next round and hopefully we will take it all the way.”

Smithtown East (18-2) had taken a 7-3 lead midway through the second period with a 4-0 run. But the Braves trailed only 8-7 at halftime and then completely dominated the second half when they outscored the Bulls, 7-0.

Jonathan Klobus grabbed eight saves and Alex Concannon and Lucas Cotler tallied three goals and one assist each for Syosset.

“This was a great game, really well played,” said Klobus. “This was a team effort. Our offense really stepped up. Our defense held it together in the second half and that is the reason we won the game. Shutting them down in the second half allowed our offense to move the ball around and score. This feels amazing.”

Sean Turner grabbed 10 saves, John Daniggelis tallied three goals and Brian Willets tallied two goals and one assist for Smithtown East.

Syosset’s post-season also included a stunning 17-8 win over No. 2, previously undefeated and defending state champion Massapequa in the Nassau County final.

“To win a Long Island Championship by getting through Massapequa and Smithtown East is phenomenal,” said Syosset head coach John Calabria. “These were two great teams.

“Our kids just really stepped up and executed. They put our team in a situation where we could come out on top. Our offense has won us a lot of games but against Massapequa and Smithtown East the defense really won those championships.

Jonathan Klobus

“We are just so proud of our guys. We feel pretty good we just beat two of the best teams in the country. So we will see what the upstate guys know and go from there.”

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Matt Gavin scored off Kyle Cherry feed with 28.1 seconds left to give Manhasset a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Mt. Sinai Saturday in the Long Island Class B championship game at Stony Brook University.

Gavin (three goals) completed a stunning comeback for the Indians (15-5), who trailed, 6-3, in the fourth period and forged a 6-6 tie on a goal by Tyler Dunn (16 of 17 face-offs, two goals, two assists).

Manhasset (Section 8 winner) will play defending state champion Yorktown (16-4) Wednesday at 8pm at Middletown High School in the state semifinals. Yorktown, the Section 1 champ, routed Albany Academy, 21-9.

“We were down at half, we were finding all the seams in their zone but we were hitting the gate and hitting the pipe,” said Gavin. “At the end we finally put it together.

“We knew their zone and we practiced their zone but at the end we got it when it counted. We knew we could pull this out. We’ve been in these games all season against Garden City, Boys’ Latin and all the big games. We never lost hope. It didn’t really faze us that we were down.”

Manhasset started its fourth-period comeback when Jack Keogh scored with 11:08 to play, making it 6-4. Gavin’s second goal of the game, off a Logan Dunn assist, pulled Manhasset within 6-5 with 8:41 remaining and after Kevin Mack found Tyler Dunn to tie it, Mt Sinai got flagged for a slash with a minute left giving Manhasset a man up situation that led to the game-winner.

“This feels fantastic,” said Gavin. “We feel like we can beat anybody. We feel like we are on top of the world right now.”

Mt Sinai started the game on a 3-0 run not allowing Manhasset to get a goal until the 43.1 mark of the first quarter. At the half Mt Sinai was up 5-2.

“The first three quarters we were a little shaky,” said Tyler Dunn. “We knew we couldn’t let it go this way so in the fourth quarter we really stepped it up, just ran our offense and it just fell our way.

“We are used to being down playing a very hard schedule. We are used to being in tight situations. When it really counted we just put it away. I feel very confident going forward. Once we go upstate it is going to be amazing. I’ve never experienced it but I’m excited.”

Dan Kennan tallied two goals and one assist for Mt Sinai (16-4).

“The kids showed a lot of heart,” said Manhasset head coach Bill Cherry. “In the fourth quarter we settled down and knew it was almost over and we just started hitting our shots.

Matt Gavin

Matt Gavin

“Tyler Dunn has worked so hard. We asked him to be the face off guy because he is the best athlete on the team. He was just phenomenal today. Unfortunately we didn’t take advantage of all the face offs he gave us.

“He gave us the opportunity to win the game at the end. This is great. It is good to be back. Yorktown is a traditional program like us. They play blue collar lacrosse. So we have to get ready to go up there and play them.”

GARDEN CIIY, N.Y. – Sydney Pirreca scored in the fourth overtime Saturday to lift Mt. Sinai to a thrilling 10-9 victory over Cold Spring Harbor in the Long Island girls’ lacrosse Class C championship at Adelphi University.

Sophomore goalie Hannah Van Middelem made eight saves, including a key stop just before the game-winner as the Mustangs (18-1) advanced to the state semifinals Friday (9 a.m. at Cortland) vs. Section 3 champion Skaneateles, a 20-5 winner over Salmon River.

Mary Ellen Carron and Pirreca scored in overtime (non-sudden death) before Cold Spring Harbor (12-7) rallied to tie on goals by Lindsey Willcocks and then Brooke Jensen with 4.8 seconds left.

That set up sudden death. Van Middelem stopped a close-in shot by Tara Atkinson and fed the ball to Pirreca, who went the length of the field and won it.

“All the adrenaline; it was a big game, and we needed to score,” said Pirreca. “I was out of breath, but, at that moment in time, it was a do-or-die situation.

“You have to do whatever you have to do to get that goal and get your team on top.”

Sydney Pirreca

Pirreca credited Van Middelem for the save that gave her the chance to get the game-winner.

“Without her, we would have lost that game,” she said. “She’s been stepping up huge for us, she’s an amazing player – she’s only a sophomore.

“She’s been keeping us in very close games, so I owe it all to her today.”

Said Van Middelem: “I just threw everything at it; I just jumped at the ball. That’s all you can really do in that situation.”

The Seahawks had the lead themselves when Ashley Lynch scored with three minutes left in regulation. But Mt. Sinai tied it with 1:37 left on a goal by Camryn Harloff, off a feed from Kasey Mitchell.

Meaghan Tyrrell had two goals and an assist for Mt. Sinai.

“I expected this kind of game,” said Mt. Sinai coach Al Bertolone. “They’re a very good team, and we’re a very good team. Her girls played well, my girls played well – I have a lot of respect for (coach) Danielle Castellane of Cold Spring Harbor. Somebody had to win, somebody had to lose.”

Other Long Island championships:
Class B – Eastport-South Manor 11, Wantagh 10

The Sharks won their first Long Island championship and knocked off the No. 10 team in the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings.

Kaeli Huff had three goals and two assists and Kasey Choma and Kelsey Huff each had had three goals while Sam Giacalone made nine saves for ESM (17-3).

The Sharks took an 11-8 edge on Kelsey Huff’s 8-meter with just over six minutes to play and held on behind the goaltending of Giacalone.

ESM will play Watertown Friday in the semifinals at Cortland. Watertown (18-2), the Section 3 champion, routed Massena, 18-2.

Class A – West Islip 11, Syosset 7

The Lions (17-3) seized a 10-4 halftime lead and coasted as Chelsea Sorahan had four goals and Vanessa Costantino had three goals and three assists.

West Islip will face defending state champion West Genesee Friday in the semis at Cortland. West Genesee (Section 3, 16-3) handled Coring, 13-9.

Nicole Concannon had three goals for Syosset (10-6).

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Lucas Quinn had five goals and an assist and Aidan O’Brien tallied three goals and four assists to boost Niskayuna to a 14-11 stunning 14-11 victory Wednesday over Syosset in the New York State Class A semifinals at Middletown High.

Aidan O'Brien

Aidan O’Brien

Niskayuna, the Section II champ, improves to 20-2 and will play West Genesee at Vestal High for the state title Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Syosset (18-2), the Section 8 champ, entered play ranked No. 2 in the Epoch Lacrosse North America Rankings after defeating defending champion Massapequa and Smithtown East to win the Long Island title.

“This was a great game,” said O’Brien. “We knew it would come down to who tried harder and who put more hard work into it. This is our year in the state semis so we knew we had to go all out here.

“Our Achilles heel is finishing games. We have had the tendency to not finish games out, to start off strong and finish slow. We played a complete game. After the first half we finished the game and that is what we needed to do. We feel awesome there is not a better feeling in the world right now.”

Mac O’Keefe had put the Braves up 11-10 with two of his six goals at the end of the third period. But Quinn tied it and John Prendergast put the Silver Warriors up for good. O’Brien tallied two more to ice.

“This is a big win,” said Niskayuna head coach Mike Vorgang. “Whenever you get chance to go to a state final it is a big opportunity. It is our goal just to get there. This is our third time and we want to get it done this time.

“We did a really nice job of composing ourselves under the pressure that Syosset put us under. I feel good. We have to see what West Genesee looks like on film. They are one of the best programs in the country. Whoever we would have had to play in the final four is really good so it is what it is.”

Nick Hatzipetrakos tallied three goals and Alex Concannon tallied one goal and two assists for Syosset.

“I thought Niskayuna came to play,” said Syosset head coach John Calabria. “I think they played really hard and they beat us.

“I feel bad for our guys but I also think they are a tremendous group of kids. Our journey ends here but I was so proud of their effort on the field. All the credit goes to Niskayuna they came to play.”

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – After his team had surrendered a two-goal lead in the final 95 seconds of play, Manhasset’s Matt Gavin had little time to think as he saw a loose ball lying on the Yorktown crease with time running out.

Matt Gavin

Matt Gavin

Gavin scooped up the ball and scored his only goal of the game with 0.5 seconds left to lift Manhasset to a 10-9 New York State Class B semifinal victory over defending state champion Yorktown Wednesday night at Middletown High.

“This is unbelievable,” said Gavin, whose Indians (16-5) advance to play undefeated Victor Saturday at Vestal High (4 p.m.) in the final. “I’m speechless right now. We were up by two with two minutes left. We were trying to stall at the end but without any luck.

“Then we find ourselves tide with 26 seconds left, we go in front of the goal and the ball is on the ground. The ball was at my feet and I picked it up and shot. That was it. This feels awesome.”

Tyler Dunn was a dominant force for Manhasset, winning 20 of 23 face-offs while adding five goals and two assists.

But the Huskers (16-5) pulled within 9-8 when Nick del Bene (two goals, two assists) fed Justin Cavallo with 1:35. Dunn won the face-off and Manhasset tried to stall, but Yorktown goalie Liam Donnelly intercepted the ball with 1:12 left, leading to Ryan Baker’s game tying goal with 26.4 seconds left.

Dunn won the face-off and tried to pass, but the ball was knocked out of bounds. Soon after, with seconds left Gavin grabbed it and just fired.

“This was a tough game,” said Dunn. “They were an outstanding team. We just had a lot of heart and dedication and we just wanted to take it all the way. When they tied the game all I kept thinking on the face off was don’t jump, don’t jump.

Tyler Dunn

“I timed the whistle perfectly and I just executed and ended up passing it to my teammate. When we scored it was just amazing. I was like wow did that actually go in. I was getting ready for a whole other face-off and Gavin pulled off that unbelievable move. We feel very confident.”

Nick Del Bene tallied two goals and two assists and Donnelly grabbed 10 saves for Yorktown.

“We built some leads and then we weren’t patient with the ball and made some mistakes,” said Manhasset head coach Bill Cherry. “They are a good team. They bang the ball around and if you leave somebody open they bury it.

“They have very good shooters. I thought our offense played extremely well today. We just have to take better care of the ball and work on our stall. This feels great, going back to the states, there is nothing like it.

“We know Victor is undefeated and if you’re undefeated you have to have something going for you. We will exchange film tonight, so we will look at it and we will be ready.”

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Ryan Winkoff tallied four goals and Matt Licciardi won 17 of 19 face-offs to spark Cold Spring Harbor to an easy 14-4 victory over Pleasantville Wednesday in the New York State Class C Semifinals at Middletown High.

Section VIII champ Cold Spring Harbor (18-1) will play Cazenovia in the state championship Saturday at 11am at Vestal High. Cazenovia (20-2), of Section III, defeated Penn Yan, 9-5.

“We wouldn’t be here without Matty Licciardi or our defense,” said Winkoff. “Without them we just can’t win. They make it easier for the offense. Our offense is peaking right now and our chemistry is peaking right now so it’s good.

“This year we wanted it more because we’ve been upset the last two years. That was probably the best game we played all year. I’m looking forward to playing Saturday.”

Cold Spring Harbor raced to a 3-0 lead and after Pleasantville got its first goal with2.9 seconds left in the first quarter the Seahawks went on a 5-0 run as Riley Cox and Colin Burke each tallied two goals.

“It has been such a long time since we have been back here, since 2006,” said Cold Spring Harbor head coach Dennis Bonn. “You almost don’t know what to expect. This is probably as good as we have played all year.

“This was an outstanding effort by everybody, especially Matt Licciardi at the face off X. It is such an advantage to start with that possession every single time. It was a pleasure to watch that today. There are two teams left standing maybe we win maybe we don’t, but we are there.”

Josh Della Puca tallied three goals for Pleasantville (19-2, Section 1 champ).

“Looks like we came out a little bit tight,” said Pleasantville head coach Chris Kear. “We were on our heels a little bit in the beginning. We gave up some easy goal especially in the first half.

“They were just a really talented team. They were better athletes then us, they were better on ground balls and they won almost every single face-off. That was pretty much the key to the game.”

VESTAL, N.Y – Taylor Strough scored four goals and Cold Spring Harbor withstood a late rally to defeat defending champ Cazenovia, 9-8, Saturday to win the New York Class C state title at Vestal High.

The Seahawks (19-1), who won their 18th straight game, claimed their first state title since 2006.

Matt Licciardi added a goal and four assists – all on Striough’s tallies – and won 15 of 21 face-offs for Cold Spring Harbor, which held a 9-6 lead early in the fourth period before allowing the Lakers (20-3) to pull within 9-8 with just over two minutes to play.

“The past two years we’ve been heartbroken losing in the county championship and this team has never been up here to states,” said Matt Licciardi, who assisted on all four of Strough’s goals and won 15 of 21 face-offs. “We knew we were going to come up against the best team possible.

“We just played our tails off. I have to give credit to all my teammates and coaches. This was a great season. I can’t even put into words how this feels. This was amazing. The last 30 seconds my heart was pounding out my chest.”

Matt Licciardi

Cazenovia went up early, grabbing a 3-1 lead going into the second quarter. Cold Spring Harbor responded by owning the second quarter and Ian Laviano’s goal gave the Seahawks a 4-3 halftime lead.

“I’ve dreamt of this all my life,” said Strough. “This is the best feeling in the world. Now we can celebrate; we did it and it’s over.

“That was scary at the end. I saw that clock run out and was like ‘Thank God.’ Licciardi is just always on his face offs. He gets us the ball, that’s what gets us the ball on offense to score. He is our X man. We won as a team, and that’s what needed to be done. Now we can celebrate.”

Laviano later gave his team an 8-5 lead in the third period before PJ Brown pulled Cazenovia within 8-6 late in the quarter. Licciardi found Strough to make it 9-6 early in the fourth, but Cole Willard closed the gap to 9-7 with just over eight minutes left.

“Unbelievable,” said Cold Spring Harbor head coach Dennis Bonn. “I’m so happy for kids, the community and the coaching staff. It’s a whirlwind, you win the counties and then it is boom, boom, boom, one after another.

“You almost don’t have time to breathe. It is a wonderful, wonderful feeling. I thought Taylor shot the ball very well today. Matty isn’t just a faceoff guy, he is an outstanding offensive player. I’m happy for everyone especially the seniors.”

PJ Brown tallied three goals and Cole Willard tallied two goals for Cazenovia.

“This was well played by both teams,” said Cazenovia head coach Jim Longo. “They just had a couple more things go their way than ours. That’s the way you want a championship game to be.”

Senior captains Kasey Mitchell and Sydney Pirreca said the disappointment of an early exit in last year’s post-season served as extra fuel for the Mt. Sinai girls’ lacrosse team in 2015.

The Mustangs (20-1) defeated Honeoye-Falls Lima, 8-5, Saturday at Vestal High to win the NY Class C state title for the second time in three years. Last year Mt. Sinaisuffered its only loss in the Suffolk County finals.

“This win is the sweetest of them all,” said Pirreca, the game’s MVP with three goals and an assist. “It is my, along with the other seniors last ‘hoorah’ as a Mount Sinai senior. It definitely makes it a little easier to leave this team now that we finally got a state championship again.

“Especially after the loss of last year. That was a real heartbreaker for us. It was very unexpected. Looking back on it now, I can only be thankful for that loss. Without that loss I’m not sure we would have the same fire and motivation we had this year. We really took that loss to heart especially for our seniors of last year. I think that we worked very hard to get back to the top and I couldn’t be more proud of my team for getting here again.”

Mitchell, who had four goals, said that loss to Bayport-Blue Point was felt hard.

“Last year was 100% our motivation to win this year,” she said. “Being a senior this year I wanted to go out a winner and with the help of my team and coaches I was able to do that. Losing last year really opened our eyes and realized that it was possible for us to lose. So, this year we never underestimated anyone. We acted as if each game was a big game and took it one game at a time.”

On Saturday Mt. Sinai took a 6-2 lead at halftime and never allowed the Section 5 champion Cougars (13-9) to really threaten.

“Today’s game plan was more about focusing on us rather than the opponent,” said Pirreca. “We obviously were aware of there key players and our defense adjusted to that, and did a great job doing it. I think it was more about our game plan. Being able to focus on ourselves and doing our thing, rather than getting all caught up in the opponents style of play.”

The Mustangs had to win some key games to win the Long Island championship – avenging Bayport-Blue Point, 7-4, and then winning a monumental four-overtime marathon, 10-9, over Cold Spring Harbor before thumping defending state champ Skaneateles, 13-7, in the semis.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment,” said Pirreca of the state title. “Especially after going into quadruple over time against Cold Spring Harbor. It’s definitely been a tough journey to make our way to the top, but it feels amazing and accomplishing to finally get the outcome we wanted.”

“I mean getting here was definitely a struggle,” added Mitchell. “We’ve worked so hard and so long just for the opportunity and we took full advantage of it. I couldn’t be any happier to win this big of a game with the girls and coaches on this team.”

VESTAL, N.Y. – Aidan O’Brien tallied five goals and MVP Nick Testa grabbed 17 saves to lift Niskayuna to a 13-10 win Saturday over West Genesee in the New York State Class A Championship at Vestal High.

This was Niskayuna’s first state title for a program that started in 1994. It also the first state championship for a Section 2 team.

Niskayuna (21-2) closed the year with 15 straight wins and prevented West Genesee (18-3) from winning its 16th state title.

“I am speechless,” said O’Brien. “This is a dream come true. This is our fourth time being here as a program and we wanted to win this for our coach (Mike Vorgang), for the town and for our team.

“I’ve been playing with these kids for 10 years now and I couldn’t ask for a better ending to my Niskayuna career. We got a little sloppy at the end but we finished the game and we won. I’m ecstatic right now.”Aidan O'Brien

Niskayuna outscored the Wildcats in each period and led, 8-6, in a high-scoring first half. West Genesee cut the lead to one early the third quarter, but John Prendergast (four goals), Lucas Quinn (three goals), Prendergast and O’Brien scored in succession to put the Silver warriors in control.

“We went into this game pretty confident, knowing what they were going to do,” said Testa. “So we just had to execute our game plan. I just got into a rhythm and kept going with it.

“After I made the first two saves I tried to use the momentum off the next one. We were just trying to hold them to one goal every quarter. This is unbelievable.”

John Prendergast tallied four goals and one assist and Lucas Quinn tallied three goals for Niskayuna.

“I thought the game was kind of wild, the ball was all over the place,” said Vorgang. “Our kids responded pretty well to the craziness of the game and eventually matched the energy and scored more goals then they did.

“They put us into tough situations on the rides and they cleared the ball effectively. But we scored more goals then they did so that’s good. Our defense was great and our goalie was even better. This feels great. For us it has been since 1994 when the program started. It is a great honor to be here.”

Nick Cunningham tallied two goals and one assist and Conor Bartlett and David Procopio both tallied two goals each for West Genesee.

“That was a good fun game,” said West Genesee head coach Mike Messere. “It went well. We kept playing back but they were just a little too much for us. Their goalie made some great saves when he had to make it and that made the difference.”

VESTAL, N.Y. – Dan Barrow tallied six goals and T.D Ierlan won 20 of 28 face-offs to boost Victor to a 17-8 victory over Manhasset Saturday in the New York Class B championship, capping a perfect 22-0 season and the Blue Devils’ first state title.

Victor raced to an 8-0 first-period lead and kept its streak of not allowing a team to score in double figure the entire year.

“Overall, the whole team has just played great the whole year,” said Barrow. “Our goalie (Chayse Ierlan) and our face off guy are brothers and they are a couple of the greatest players on the team. They always come up huge.

“Our defense has never let up 10 goals in a game and if our offense can score 10 we’ll win. Our coaches studied them and we learned that their slides package was different and we passed the ball very good and we scored. This is amazing; it is our first time going and our first win.”

Manhasset was able to cut the lead to four goals in the second quarter and later in the third period, but scored the game’s last five goals and held the Indians (16-6) scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Drew Collins tallied four goals and two assists and Jamie Trimboli tallied two goals and five assists for Victor.

“We talked about needing to play great defense,” said Victor head coach Nick Ballou. “The defense transitioned the ball to our offense.

“I think our kids did a great job. We knew Manhasset was going to be firing on all cylinders. They had a great goalie. They have great attacks and great middies. When you get to the final you are going to see great competition. Our kids did a great job of finding their weak spots and exposing them. This feels great.”

James Papadopoulos grabbed 10 goals and Tyler Dunn and Matthew Gavin tallied two goals each for Manhasset.

“We dug a hole 8-0 nothing to start,” said Manhasset head coach Bill Cherry. “We got it down to four but we couldn’t get any closer than that. They’re a great team. We gave them that early lead and it is tough to come back from that.”
