Smithtown East (N.Y.) 2018 goalie James O’Connell has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division II lacrosse at American International College.

James O’Connell profile:

James O’Connell

High school: Smithtown High School East, NY

Position: Goalie

Grad year: 2018

College signed with: American International College

Club team: Recon

Lacrosse honors: Long Island (Suffolk Top 20 Showcase Team)

Expected major: Sports Management

Why did you choose American International? “From the moment I stepped on campus I felt welcomed and was met by coach (Tim) Robbins, who made me feel right at home. The school itself felt right all around. The classes are small, there’s lots of room for advancement, and the students receive lots of opportunities that not many colleges offer.”

HS team’s 2018 outlook: “We are looking really strong this year in my opinion. We lost a lot of key players last year so that left a little dent on us. But we all are working harder than ever on and off the field to get back where we left off. We are playing as a team and we are ready to prove people wrong this season and make a run for states.”

Thank You: “I would like to thank my parents and family as a whole; they pushed me to become a stronger student athlete and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. I would like to thank every coach that has helped me out along the way. Lastly I want to thank my team; they’re all hard working guys and I always look forward to getting after it with them.”

From Press release

Sweetlax Lacrosse is thrilled to announce that Professional lacrosse player Randy Staats will be taking on a primary role with the Sweetlax family. Recently named Sweetlax Director of Box Lacrosse, Staats is a prime addition to the Sweetlax coaching staff. A longtime presence in the Lacrosse world and MLL, Staats will bring great insight with a focus on improving player development and lax IQ.

Randy Staats

The Sweetlax Box program began 3 years ago and continually evolves from year to year. Players will gain value in having Randy assist them in developing their fullest capabilities indoors, introducing them to a much faster game which brings players improved stick skills, reaction time as well as increase their speed of play and understanding of the game.

“Having Randy head up Box lacrosse will truly set apart our program,” said Sweetlax Club Director Tommy Costanza. “Staats has made himself a name in the box lacrosse world being awarded 2016 Rookie of the Year and most recently named in the Top 10 of players by Inside Lacrosse.”

Staats grew up surrounded by lacrosse in Ontario, Canada on Six Nations. At the age of 3 he had a stick in his hand learning the game from his dad, various family members and working in his backyard. Highly regarded as one of the top playmakers in DI lacrosse at Syracuse University, Staats also played on the Iroquois Nationals team in the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.

Staats has been not only a role model for younger players but a Coach that will teach them what it means to play with passion. He will focus his time on camps and clinics to guide players on how to take their game to the next level and the importance of keeping their stick with them at all times. “I’m excited to help players get better in a creative way by using techniques that helped me get to the level I have been able to compete at throughout my career,” said Staats.

Sweetlax Box Lacrosse will begin this January for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Practices will run through the months of January and February at Your Sports Depot located in Macedon. To register for Sweetlax Box Lacrosse please visit: http://www.sweetlaxlacrosse.com/upstate/box-lacrosse/

From Press Release

The top U19 boys and U17 girls lacrosse players from the USA and Canada will unite in Jacksonville, Florida later this month for the Brogden Cup, a historic three-day lacrosse series organized by LEGACY Global Sports that promotes international fellowship through the sport of lacrosse between the two countries.

The competition will be held December 27-29 at Jacksonville University.

Players representing the United States have qualified for selection by competing in the USSSA National Lacrosse Classic this past summer. The U19 boys’ team is comprised of players from NLC champion Rochester.

Representing Canada in the Brogden Cup is Team Ontario, a provincial team featuring the top players selected from tryouts conducted by the Ontario Lacrosse Association. It is naturally a much-anticipated event for Canadian lacrosse enthusiasts. “Any time the US and Canada play lacrosse, the games are competitive,” said Stan Cockerton, a US and Canadian Hall of Fame inductee and Past President of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL). “I would not expect anything different this year.”

U15 boys from Canada and the United States will play a friendly competition in conjunction with the Brogden Cup. Local players from the State of Florida will also play exhibition games against teams from the United States and Canada.

Lacrosse All Stars is pleased to announce a new media partnership with the National Lacrosse Classic-Brogden Cup that includes the live production and streaming of six international lacrosse games at the end of December. Fans worldwide will have the chance to watch USA top high school talent face-off against the best players from the Ontario Lacrosse Association.

Hosted at Jacksonville University in Florida and designed to promote international fellowship between the United States and Canada, the Brogden Cup features gameplay at the U19 Boys, U17 Girls and U15 Boys levels. Aspiring young athletes get the opportunity to experience international field lacrosse competition at the highest level outside of the FIL World Games, which are limited to every four years.

Teams representing the US and Ontario, Canada, will compete in a ?three? game? series ?combining points from the boys and girls divisions ??to decide which country tak?es? home the Brogden Cup. The U19 and U17 series – six games total – will be live streamed December 27-29 by Lacrosse All Stars.

“The Brogden Cup embodies a special narrative that can help inspire more players to enjoy the game while striving to compete at the highest level. We’re pumped to put these games on display for the worldwide lacrosse community to see, free of charge!” – Connor Wilson, LaxAllStars

The event was founded in the 1990’s and is named after H. McCullough Brogden who played at Johns Hopkins University in the early 1930’s. H.M. Brogden played on the 1932 US Olympic team. The Summer games were held in Los Angeles that year, and Brogden relished in representing his country.

The Brogden Cup is organized by LEGACY Global Sports, an elite youth sports event and management company company. LEGACY offers tours, tournaments, events and services across all major sports around the globe.

Rep Your State
“The media prowess of LaxAllStars remains unmatched in our game. We’re excited to collaborate with them and shine a light on the Brogden Cup. Fans can expect to witness some of greatest high school talent from the US and Ontario. We’ve designed this event to serve as an inspiring platform for the next generation of high school lacrosse players in the United States.” – Joel Franklin, Legacy Global Sports

Players from the United States qualify to play in the annual Brogden Cup by winning the National Lacrosse Classic (NLC), which takes place annually in mid-July.

Through a comprehensive regional tryouts process, the best high school lacrosse players in the country are selected to represent their respective regions at the NLC. The NLC Champion advances on to face Ontario in the Brogden Cup each December.

“Any time the US and Canada play lacrosse, the games are competitive. I would not expect anything different this year.” – Stan Cockerton, Hall of Fame Player and Past FIL President

This is a look back at Rochester’s championship win at the National Lacrosse Classic in July; the team will represent Team USA Wednesday through Friday at the Brogden Cup in Jacksonville, FL

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Rochester bolted to a 7-0 halftime lead and rolled to a 9-2 victory today over Florida to win the boys’ High School championship at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic at the River City Sportsplex.

Rochester wins the HS boys’ championship at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic

Rochester went undefeated in the tourney and used stellar goaltending by Patrick Cuddihy (7 saves) and Matthew Holowka (3 saves) as well as dominant work at the face-off X by Michael Northrup in the title game.

By virtue of winning the boys’ HS crown, Rochester advances to the Brogden Cup in late December at Jacksonville University where it will play in an International tourney against Canada as well as a Florida All-Star team.

Michael Northrup

“Obviously we had a lot of adrenaline after a long, hot day and we knew we had to win faceoffs,” said Northrup, a 2019 from Webster Schroeder. “Our offense has been putting the ball in the net all week long. Our defense was rock solid and we have two of the best goaltenders in the country – our team is just outstanding.

“We’re very excited to go to Florida as Team USA for the Brogden Cup.”

“I think we all moved the ball well on offense and got a lot of good shots and good takes,” said 2018 defenseman Ryan Martin (Brighton), who was an All-Star selection. “The defense slid well and helped out with each other.”

Why was the title game so lopsided?

“I think we just came out and worked hard and it paid off for us,” Martin said. “It’s very exciting (to advance to the Brogden Cup) I love playing with these guys. It will be fun.”

Seth Grottenthaler, a 2020 midfielder from Corning Painted Post, said he has never been on a plane before but will get over his fears to trek to Florida in December.

Ryan Martin

“I thought first of all we played good team defense,” he said. “Everyone communicated well and the goaltending was amazing. We cleared well and got the ball up and out every time. The offense slowed it down and got good chances and got good shots.”

“I think we meshed together well and worked together as a team; and we always hit that one more pass and got the best shot,” added 2020 defenseman Seth Hogue (Corning Painted Post). “We had great mesh down there on defense and the goalie was always talking. We were talking and we got out on the clears, making sure we had the ‘One,’ the ‘Two,’, the slide. We played good defense all around.”
