GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Jared Nugent tallied four goals and four assists and Thomas Heagerty scored five goals as St. Anthony’s dominated Chamnade, 18-5, today in the NSCHSAA ‘AAA’ Championship game at Mitchell Field.

The Friars (14-2, No. 13 in the Epoch Lacrosse Rankings) won their first title since 2012 and the first time they swept Chaminade in a season since 2001. Both regular-season games were one-goal wins.
“This is a great way to go out, my last year here,” said Nugent. “We swept them this year. We got embarrassed by them last year. I’ve never lost that bad in a game, so we really wanted to come back this year and return the favor.
St. Anthony’s took control from the start , bolting to a 7-0 lead before the Flyers scored.
“This was a great game,” said Heagerty. “This was a weird game to be honest with you because the last two games were close games, but not today.
“We played as hard as we could and we knew we had to because they weren’t going to lose. After starting the game 7-0 we knew we had to keep going because we have a tendency to let teams get a little run going and kill our momentum, but we kept our momentum going and it was good. This feels great.”
Kyle Gallagher (one goal, two assists) grabbed 18 out of 25 face-offs, keeping the ball in St. Anthony’s hands. The Friars forced a running clock in the third quarter as Chris Merle added two goals and an assist and Ryan Rogers scored a pair.
“This was just about the kids getting it,” said St. Anthony’s head coach Keith Wieczorek. “They played so hard all year, except for a mediocre game against Delbarton, who vetted itself out to be a great team and a bad five minutes against Darien, who is number one in the Tri-State and four in the country.
“These kids play as hard as any team I’ve ever had. They play for each other. They pick each other up. They fight for every ground ball. They are relentless. They deserve this and today they earned it. I couldn’t be happier.”
John Zullo grabbed nine saves for Chaminade.
“Ouch,” said Chaminade head coach Jack Moran. “We ran into a team that was really motivated and executed to the highest level we have seen all year. They are pretty good. They got us. We didn’t execute well. Congratulations to them.”
