MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Pennsylvania was among five girls’ teams that won both their games Tuesday in the first day of action at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic at the River City Sportsplex.brine-nlc

Pennsylvania Virginia, 12-10, and Ohio, 12-7, to take the first-day lead in Pool A with New York (both 2-0). Other 2-0 teams included New England and Long Island (Pool B) and New Jersey (Pool C).

Linnea Hughes, a 2016 attack from Great Valley who had five goals in Pennsylvania’s win over Ohio, said her club jelled quickly.

“There are a few groups of girls who come from the same school, and I think as a whole our team works really well together and that we have really good chemistry,” said Hughes. “We have so much talent on our team and I think we caused a lot of turnovers to bring the ball back on the attacking end. That was huge for us.”

Pennsylvania plays Colorado today at 8 a.m. and then faces New York at 1 p.m.

“I definitely think we can get the title and that’s my goal for our team,” said Hughes. “There is no doubt we have the talent. For our team to be successful I think we need to learn from every game we play and be able to fix any miscommunications or mistakes from the previous game.”

New Jersey looked strong in its victories, 14-1 over Minnesota and 10-6 over Georgia. Stefani Peluso (Immaculata, 2017 ATT) had four goals and Abigail O’Neill (Rancocas Valley, 2017 ATT) added three in the win over Minnesota and
Megan Sullivan (Bishop Sullivan Cathplic, VA, 2016 ATT) had three in the victory over Georgia.

New York toppled Colorado, 14-5, and Ohio, 17-7. McKenna Rushford (Amherst Central, 2016 MF) had three goals for New York in the win over Ohio and Caroline Cullinan (Pittsford, 2017 MF) had three in the victory over Colorado.

Long Island had a 10-6 win over Maryland as Samantha Ottimo (St. Anthony’s, 2017 MF) tallied three goals. LI also downed Florida, 12-4, as Kiara Burke (Bellport, 2016 ATT) scored three.

New England won its games over Florida, 11-6, and Illinois, 15-4. In the win over Florida, Sloane Sweitzer (Lyme/Old Lyme, 2016 ATT), Kristina Cartwright (Buckingham, Browne and Nichols, 2016 ATT) and Jessica Lasaponara (John Jay East, 2016 ATT) each had two goals.

US Lacrosse today announced the boys’ players selected as 2015 US Lacrosse High School All-Americans.US-lacrosse1

The US Lacrosse Men’s Game All-American Awards and Recognition process is maintained by the Men’s Game Coaches Subcommittee and administered locally by the High School Area Chairmen. The subcommittee, through these area chairmen, oversees the selection of the awards.

A US Lacrosse All-American is a player who exhibits superior skills and techniques and possesses exceptional game sense and knowledge. A US Lacrosse All-American is one of the best players in the United States, while also embodying excellent sportsmanship.

In addition to players named as All-Americans and All-Academic team honorees, US Lacrosse selects winners of the Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, Man of the Year and the Bob Scott Award, which recognizes a player from each area who goes ‘above and beyond’ in service to his team, school, and community. Winners for each of these awards will be announced next week.

Note: Some local areas have not reported their selections to date and are not included in the All-America and All-Academic listings. New entries will be added as the selections are received.

From US Lacrosse

After a three-day tryout that hosted 105 players at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md., US Lacrosse today announced the 50 players who will be invited to training camp with the 2016 U.S. Men’s National Under-19 Team.

These 50 players will next reconvene for a second training camp Aug. 7-9 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. The weekend will culminate with a Team USA Blue-White exhibition game at Homewood Field, Sunday, Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. Admission is free for US Lacrosse members and $5 for non-members.US-lacrosse1

Ultimately, 23 players will be named to the final roster for the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 World Championship, July 7-16, 2016, in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

In February, US Lacrosse announced Ohio State University head coach Nick Myers as head coach of the U.S. Men’s Under-19 National Team. Myers will lead the team in its quest for an eighth consecutive world title at the FIL World Championship, and is assisted by Patrick Myers (University of Pennsylvania), Chuck Ruebling (Delbarton School) and Peter Toner (Penn State University).

“Expectations are high for this team, and the men certainly rose to the occasion over the past three days,” said head coach Nick Myers. “We got an incredible effort from all those involved at camp. We feel strongly that we laid the foundation for our team moving forward. We are grateful for the amazing support we received and excited to get back at it in August.”

The player selection committee was comprised of the U.S. U19 coaching staff, five elite high school coaches from around the country and the US Lacrosse Men’s National Team Subcommittee Chair. Additionally, four other top high school coaches were brought in as sideline coaches and assisted in player evaluation.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Wyatt Staggs welcomed the competition Thursday at the National 175 International Challenge tryout at Mitchel Complex.

Wyatt Staggs

Wyatt Staggs (Mount Paran Christian School, GA)

“I tried out because we’ve been up here for about 3 weeks and I thought it would be fun to represent the state of Georgia and also USA in the tournament,” said the 2018 LSM from Mount Paran Christian School (GA). “There was a lot of competition, but I feel really good about it, I thought I did well.”

Staggs was one of many that tried out for Team Stars and Stripes, which will compete against Team Maple Leafs, Team Iroquois and Team Israel in the International Challenge in late July at RPI.

Staggs was hopeful he will be selected for the 2018 team.

“I think the tryouts went really well.” he said. “I think they were run very well. I think that I did really well. I think that I threw some good checks, some good settled checks.

“I feel like the competition was really good but I didn’t let it get in my head. I just played the game stayed focused.”

Tryouts already were held in New Jersey at Connecticut and the last one will be held Thursday afternoon in Suburban Philly at Plymouth Whitemarsh High. Click here to register for the final tryout.

Why did you tryout for the team and what expectations did you have coming in?
Quinn:
“I tried out last year; I am just trying to get revenge. We lost last year in overtime. It was a good time; I’m hoping to have good times again.”

How did the tryouts go and what went well for you?
Quinn:
“I thought the tryout went pretty good. I had two friends that I was on the attack line with so the chemistry was there.”

How was the competition and what did you do to adjust to the level?
Quinn:
“I thought the competition was pretty good. I adjusted by just doing what I do – just going hard to the cage and get it going.”
