CORTLAND, N.Y. – Lexie Meager scored early in the third period of sudden death overtime today to lift West Genesee to a 10-9 victory over Pittsford in the New York Class A semifinals at SUNY Cortland.

The win advances the Wildcats (19-1) to the title game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Cortland vs. 21-0 Long Island champion West Islip, a 9-7 winner over Suffern.

Meager scored off a feed from Riley Donahue, who had won the draw control to start the third overtime period. Donahue had four assists.

Taylor Collins had three goals and Grace Osterdale added a pair for and Katherine Widrick made 10 saves West Genesee, which squandered an 8-4 lead.

“We should’ve had it won during regulation. But you know what? We played with heart,” said West Genesee coach Bob Elmer. “We kept playing. Our defense kept coming up with stops; stop after stop in that overtime.

“We hit the pipe a couple of times. We had chances to win there. You know what? We kept giving ourselves chances. Riley had a great feed at the end. Lexie made the right cut.”

Pittsford, down 8-4 at one point in the second half, tied the game at 8-8 when Kelsie Schindler scored off a feed from Allie Panara (three goals, two assists) with 1:55 left in regulation.

Pittsford struck first in overtime as Caroline Cullinan scored with 1:07 left. Hannah Elmer scored off a feed from Marisa Hudgins to tie it with 29 seconds left in the second overtime.

How did Pittsford (14-6) come back from an 8-4 deficit?

“You know what? Pittsford’s done that the last four games,” said Elmer. “They were down by three to Webster Thomas in the semifinal. And they won it in overtime. (Against) Penfield, they were down by four and they came back and won it.

“Pittsford has a lot of heart. They have some girls that play hard. They had chances. I’d feel distraught if I was them. I don’t think some of our kids played their best game today. Hopefully, we can get our legs back. That’s what I’m worried about over such a long game. Hopefully, we can get our legs back and feel good tomorrow.”

NY Class C boys’ championship: Bronxville tops Cazenovia Central, 13-10, in title-game rematch

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The stage was set. Two Class C powers were going to faceoff in the state title game: Cazenovia and Bronxville.

A year prior, Cazenovia defeated Bronxville, 13-11, in the same game.

Bronxville – NY Class C champion

Fast-forward 365 days: a rematch is born. This time though, the game’s outcome had an opposite result. Bronxville defeated the previously-undefeated Lakers, 13-10, to capture the 2014 New York State Class C title Saturday at Hofstra University.

The Broncos won the shot battle, 47-21. They won the ground ball battle, 51-31. They won the faceoff battle, 17-10. Most importantly though, they won the fourth quarter: 5-1.

The momentum shifted to Bronxville changed when senior Matt Behrens scored for Bronxville with 1:16 remaining in the third quarter to cut the Cazenovia Central (22-1) lead to 9-8. Behrens later scored the go-ahead goal to put the Broncos up 11-10 with 7:17 left.

It was a game that Behrens had a hold on from the beginning. The first play of the game featured a Cazenovia faceoff win, and when a Cazenovia player held possession of the ball for too long, Behrens stripped it out of his stick and took it into the box for a shot that hit the post.

“Our emotions were high, our energy was high, and to come out and make a big play like that – obviously I wish I finished that,” said Behrens. “But that stop right there was great, and got us out on the right foot.”

While it was Behrens who was key to Bronxville’s second half run, it was junior Henry Grass who kept the Broncos in the game in the first and second quarters. Grass assisted the opening goal for Bronxville, and would go on to assist four more and add two scores.

“We finished the game on Wednesday night against Babylon pretty strong, so we had a lot of momentum,” said Grass. “We knew what we had to do – we had a good scouting report. And our coach got us prepared. We knew we were able to beat that zone, it was just about executing it.”

“Henry can do it all,” said Bronxville head coach Tim Horgan. “He can shoot, he can ride, and he can pick up ground balls. He’s a phenomenal player and we’re very lucky to get him back next year.”

The two coaches showed equal respect for their opponent at the end of the contest, and had the utmost admiration for their opposing programs.

“It was a great fight between two high quality lacrosse programs,” said Cazenovia head coach Jim Longo. “It took a great team to beat a great team.”

“You don’t want to see that team lose,” said Horgan, speaking about Cazenovia. “Their coaches are some of the nicest people, and they have worked so hard, and they are so humble.”

For the Lakers, the bright spots were goalkeeper Trevor Cross and the sophomores. Cross finished with 12 saves; attacks Jake Lewis, Cole Willard, and Derek White combined for eight of the 10 goals scored by the upstate squad.

“Those guys have been getting it done all season,” said Longo. “We have a wonderful youth program in our town that feeds us great players – year in, year out.”

But it was Bronxville and Grass, the offensive MVP, who ultimately had the final word and the retribution for last year’s loss.

“We knew we were going to play them if we got back to this game, and we knew they graduated a couple of good seniors,” said Grass. “It’s great to have revenge.”

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In a rare championship game of total domination, Massapequa scored the game’s final 12 goals and coasted to a 16-2 victory over Fayetteville-Manlius Saturday for its first New York Class A state title at Hofstra University.

Massapequa (19-2), finished the year with 17 straight wins and outscored its two upstate foes, Niskayuna and FM, by a whopping 39-11.

Ian Kirby tallied three goals and one assist in the third quarter to lead a balanced attack as the Chiefs had 12 goal scorers.

Massapequa – NY Class A boys’ champion

“This is awesome, unbelievable actually,” said Kirby. “I’m so proud of my team. Our defense was outstanding today. We finished on top in Class A for 2014; this feels great.”

Massapequa led, 4-2, before Jim Byrns (two goals) scored late in the first period to make it 5-2. From that point, the Chiefs held FM (18-4) scoreless and had its way on attack.

Phil Brady gave Massapequa every opportunity by winning 17 of the 21 faceoffs. At the 6:34 mark of the fourth quarter Casey Kimmel found Justin Lynskey in front of the cage to give Massapequa a 14-2 lead and a running clock for the second straight game. Nick Yevoli tallied three goals, and Paul Dilena tallied one goal and two assists for Massapequa.

“This was a great game, the kids played real hard,” said Chiefs coach Tim Radomski, “This was our goal from March 3rd to get here. I can’t be any happier for my seniors. It’s a great day to be a Chief!

“Matt Valdini played great the last two games. Phil Brady at the X is awesome; he worked hard the past three weeks. That’s our game, we want to get the ground ball and get it to the attack because our attack is pretty potent.

“Fayetteville is a good group, they won their bracket upstate so hats off to them. This is awesome, first time ever. I can’t be any prouder of my boys. It is going to be tough to say good bye to my seniors.”

Colton Oliver tallied two goals and Brian Charlamb grabbed six saves for the Hornets.

“Massapequa is an outstanding team,” said Fayetteville-Manlius head coach Chris Kenneally. “I thought their face-off man did a tremendous job of really controlling the game. Their goalie made a number of outstanding saves and really never let us gets back in the game.

“They did a great job of swarming the ground balls and we just never really got into the game. We played hard but didn’t play as effective as we needed to.”

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Nicky Bonitatibus tallied two goals and two assists and Luke Palmadesso won 17 of 23 face-offs to help Yorktown claim a 10-9 victory over Jamesville-DeWitt for the New York Class B state championship Saturday at Hofstra University.

The Cornhuskers (18-5) won their seventh state title and their first since 2003.

Yorktown – NY Class B champion

“This is huge,” said Bonitatibus, “It has been 11 years since we have won this. This just means the world to us. Our defense stepped up, our crowd was just unreal and everyone was fired up for this game. This feels great getting this win as a senior.”

Yorktown jumped out to a 4-0 first-period lead, but the Rams (19-3) countered with four unanswered goals before Billy Strassman found Connor Vercruysse to give Yorktown a 5-4 lead with 3:59 left in the half.

Grayson Burns tied it early in the third period, but Kristopher Alvarado sparked a 3-0 run for the Huskers and the Rams never caught up.

With 5:20 remaining in the game long pole Austin Fusco grabbed a defensive ground ball, cleared the ball and scored giving Yorktown a 10-8 lead. Jamesville Dewitt made it interesting with 48 seconds left on a goal by Griffin Feiner, but Yorktown’s Palmadesso won the faceoff to seal the victory.

“This is the greatest feeling in the world,” said Fusco. “Being able to take this home senior year is the best feeling. On the last goal I just got the ball in my stick somehow and just ran. I tried to run as fast as I could, saving nothing for tomorrow.

“ I knew today was the last day we had so I tried to push it as hard as I could. It just so happened that I was able to take it to the goal, take the shot and the ball went in and it happened to be the game winner.”

Vercruysse tallied two goals, Nick Del bene tallied two goals and Austin Graham grabbed eight saves for Yorktown.

“Austin has been playing awesome all year,” said Yorktown head coach Dave Marr. “To have him come down and use his feet like that and finish that playoff for the game winner you just love to see that. I’ve been watching him make plays like that since the seventh grade so it’s nice to see him do it on a big stage like that.

“This win is tremendous. We worked very hard for this. We haven’t been back here for 11 years. This is a great feeling to have this team accomplish this.”

Grayson Burns tallied four goals and one assist, Griffin Johnson tallied four assists and Joe Morgan grabbed ten saves for Jamesville DeWitt.

“I think we had a lot of things that went against us,” said Jamesville DeWitt head coach Jamie Archer. “It’s tough coming down here and having things just not go our way.”

The National 175 has announced that Mid-Atlantic region tryouts for Team National Stars and Stripes will be held on Wednesday, July 23 at Plymouth Whitemarsh High in Plymouth Meeting, PA.

Boys from any region in the graduation classes of 2015, 2016 and 2017 are eligible to register by clicking here.

Tryouts for National Stars and Stripes – which will compete against Team Maple Leafs in the inaugural Challenge Cup – are also being held on June 18 at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT, and July 3rd at Mitchel Field Complex in Uniondale, Nassau County, Long Island. Players can register for those two tryouts with the same link.

Two teams will be formed in each of the following grades: 2015, 2016 and 2017. Team National Stars and Stripes will be coached by well-known members of the US lacrosse community and will be announced along with the team rosters on August 1st. The games will be held in mid-late September in Upstate New York

The United States and Canada have been constantly fighting to determine the dominant country for lacrosse. Clearly the United States is larger and continues to grow the sport at a rapid rate, but lacrosse is Canada’s national sport and, while hockey is very big in Canada, people underestimate just how much Canadians love lacrosse, both box and field lacrosse. This event will feature 10v10 field lacrosse.

With the World Games coming and the tremendous success many Canadians have had in many of our NCAA programs, Canada’s prominence in lacrosse cannot be ignored. While many Canadians focus heavily on box lacrosse, the Canadians are also growing the field game very rapidly and you see that growth on the college level.

Tryouts for these teams begin on June 18th and we are seeking the top players in the United States. Each team will have 24 players. Players selected for the teams will be notified on August 1st and shortly thereafter, there will be an announcement of the rosters of the complete team.

This is not a recruiting event, however, considering each of the tryouts will be held during the NCAA allowable recruiting window and the quality of players trying out for these teams, it is likely that there may be college coaches attending.

Tryout dates and locations:

June 18th – Choate Rosemary Hall, Wallingford, CT
July 3rd – Mitchell Fields, Uniondale, Nassau County, Long Island
July 23rd – Plymouth Whitemarsh High, Plymouth Meeting, PA (Philly suburbs)

register by clicking here.

Optional Practice: Players meet their team and coach for a practice the day before the Showcase. This improves the quality of the games on Friday. College coaches will also be at the practice for a more in depth look at the players.

All games are videoed.

More than 90 high school and club and youth boys’ teams from the East Coast will compete this weekend in the inaugural F4 Lacrosse Philly Kickoff Classic on nine fields at West Chester University.Philly Kickoff classic

The event brings teams from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. High school “A” and “B” and U15s will play on Saturday. U9-U13s will play on Sunday. Each team plays four games in a championship style tournament.

F4 tournament co-director Glenn Carter said the tourney was created with the idea of creating a quality and well-run tournament with all fields in close proximity. He said that each field will be fully staffed and that the venue is ideal for a large group of teams at one time.

“Having been involved in coaching club and college lacrosse, we wanted to make this a tournament that brings customer service to the forefront,” Carter said. “All the fields are within three minutes of walking distance and we feel we’ll bring a great product to the field.

“We know how hard the club coaches work and we wanted to make the day as easy as possible for all involved while making it a great tournament for the kids to play in. Everything is taken care of from concessions to balls to bathrooms.”
