A total of 214 boys’ teams from U9 to high school competed this past weekend at four Bucks County (PA) sites and 27 fields in the Sixth Annual Patriot Games Lacrosse Showcase and Festival (www.patriotgameslax.com).
Tar Heel LC wins Varsity A title
Teams came from 13 states and Ontario to compete in the popular event, which was held at Herbst Field Complex (Plumstead), Palisades High School (Kintnersville), New Hope-Solebury High School (New Hope), and, for the first time, George M. Bush Park in Buckingham Township.
The Tournament featured teams from the major lacrosse hotbeds, including Maryland, New England, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, and attracted teams from as far away as Texas, Georgia and Michigan. Although the event began as a youth festival, it has added high school divisions through the interest of returning team coaches.
This year, seventy teams participated in the high school divisions, and a number of college coaches were in attendance to see the action. One hundred forty-four teams competed in the youth brackets, which were organized into AA, A and B levels to permit teams to choose their level of play and compete against similarly situated clubs. Games in both pool play and playoffs in most brackets were hotly contested, making for a challenging and fun weekend of tournament lacrosse.
The Patriot Games is unique in that it stresses sportsmanship and positive conduct by players and followers. Each player and coach signed a tournament code of conduct form and teams are graded on sportsmanship after every game by the officials, often with input from staff members and tournament marshals based on their observations of conduct on both player and spectator sidelines.
The tournament goes so far as to post sportsmanship scores on a game-by-game basis in real time along with the game results.
According to tournament the directors – Princeton University coach Chris Bates, former Swarthmore All-American and recent Eastern Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee Pat Carney, and fellow former Philadelphia Wing, Hall of Famer and Philadelphia Lacrosse Association board member Scott Growney – no other tournament keeps and posts sportsmanship data in such a transparent manner. Their goal in posting conduct-related scores is not only to acknowledge teams that materially adhere to the code of conduct but to identify outliers who do not, so those teams (and coaches, players, parents and/or program directors) are apprised and aware of perceptions.
Also in an effort to influence behavior in a positive way, signs were posted throughout the tournament sites that state, “Honor Your Kids, Honor the Game.”
The Patriot Games is an Official Qualifying Tournament for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions. Based on their success in this event, many teams have earned invitations to compete against top teams from around the country in the Dick’s Sporting Good-sponsored national championship in Wesley Chapel, Fla., in January 2014. Most of the bids being award will be to automatic qualifiers, but the Tournament is given a few “Director’s Bids” to distribute to at-large teams in the discretion of the tournament directors. The directors are working with TOC representatives to issue invitations to automatic and identify potential at-large qualifiers.
