MINEOLA, N.Y. – Ryan Tierney collected four goals and one assist to boost visiting Massapequa to a 13-11 victory over Chaminade today in a battle of Top 10 teams from Long Island.
This was Massapequa’s first win over Chaminade in over 10 years.

“I thought our defense played well,” said Tierney. “They held them at the end of the game when we needed it.

“I was just trying to take my opportunities when I had them and shoot the ball as hard as I can. We finally came off the bus ready to play.”

The defending State Class A Champion Chiefs, No. 7 in the Epoch Lacrosse North America Rankings, improved to 2-0. No. 3 Chaminade was making its season debut.

Massapequa came off the bus red hot, and took a quick 4-0 lead and led 9-4 at halftime over the two-time CHSAA defending champs.

The Flyers pulled within two only at the end when Brendan Kerns scored to make it 12-10. But Tierney scored his fourth goal off a pass from Paul Dilena with 3:41 putting Massapequa back up by three goals

Dilena tallied two goals and three assists, Carter Hawthorne had two goals and two assists, Griff Konen notched two goals and one assist and Justin Lynskey scored two goals for Massapequa.

“This was a great game between two great teams,” said Massapequa head coach Tim Radomski. “We said to the kids that this was going to be a heavy weight fight for four rounds and it came down to the final round.

“Our kids stuck it out to the end, played real hard and came out with the victory for the first time. Chaminade is just a great team. This is something to grow on but like we said this is non-league and our league starts on Friday so let’s take this and grow on this win and continue to get better.”

Jack Brennan, Jack Tigh and Brendan Quinn had two goals and one assist each for Chaminade.

“We dug ourselves a little hole early in the game and we clawed back out but we just didn’t claw far enough,” said Chaminade head coach Jack Moran. “We are young and a little inexperienced.

“We have a lot of guys that are back but not a lot of guys that played a lot last year. So we are going to have some growing pains. It was a great game for our kids. Yea we are disappointed but they earned it. They played better.”
