After falling, 18-5, to mighty McDonogh School on Friday, Milton’s girls’ lacrosse team rebounded with an impressive victory Saturday night.Girls high school

Hannah Davis collected three goals, nine draw controls and three groundballs to spark the Eagles – ranked 13th in the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings – to a 13-10 win over No. 9 Vero Beach (FL).

“We had a tough game against McDonogh,” said Milton coach Tim Godby of his five-time defending state champion Eagles. “They were just simply way better than us in all phases. To stay with McDonogh, you have to take advantage of opportunities when you have them and limit mistakes.

“They make you pay for mistakes. Playing a team like this helps us learn what we need to improve on.”

Improve the Eagles did as they handed the Fighting Indians (11-1) their first loss. Milton flashed balance vs. Vero as Emily Velez (2 goals, 1 assist), Taylor Catts (2 goals, 3 GB’s, 2 FTO’s), Claire Smith (1 goal, 1 assist, 9 draws), Jessie Masinko (2 goals, 1 assist, 4 GB’s), Morgan Franklin (4 GB’s, 3 FTO’s), and Lindsey Burton (3 GB’s, 2 draws, 2 FTO’s) led the way and
Shahpar Mirza had 12 saves.

“I’m very proud of our girls for bouncing back from a tough loss against McDonogh to beat a good team like Vero,” said Godby. “We have a lot of respect for their program and what they’ve accomplished and they bring out the best in us.

“We started the game hot by going up 4-0. Our girls were very scrappy on the draws and did a great job getting possession on the 50/50 balls. Vero started scoring some goals but didn’t get closer than three the entire game. The halftime score was 8-4. We extended the lead in the second half to 13-7 and were able to control possession and burn some time off the clock to keep the ball out of Vero’s possession.”

Vero made a late rally, scoring three consecutive goals to cut the lead to 13-10, but Mirza had two big saves to preserve the win.
