Goalie Allison Mervine said her best strategy entering Saturday’s Frozen 150 Girls’ Lacrosse Showcase at the Fredericksburg Field House (VA) was to remain relaxed.

“I thought the level of competition was very high and I honestly felt it was at a level I was comfortable playing at,” said Mervine, from Archbishop Spalding and Integrty 2017. “I didn’t change anything; I just went out relaxed, playing my game.”

MVPs from Team Lions were: Allison Mervine (2017 GK), Lyla Jones (2017 Mid), & Gabrielle Cohen (2018 Def)

MVPs (from left) from Team Lions were: Allison Mervine (2017 GK, Archbishop Spalding-MD), Lyla Jones (2017 Mid, Potomac School-MD), & Gabrielle Cohen (2018 Def, Mainland Regional-NJ)

Mervine may have been relaxed inside, but outside she caught the eye of the directors and coaches for her great communication skills and ability to work with defenses. She was named the Top Goalie in the event and also was named a co-MVP for Team Lions.

The event – which featured elite uncommitted players from around the East Coast and was run by Victory Events – featured speed and agility training and 7v7 showcase games as well as position drills as well as a recruiting seminar run by college coaches.

Mervine also answered these questions:

What went well for you during the event?
Mervine:
“The connections I made with other players – not only on my team but other girls in the showcase – helped me make crisper clears and improve my communication. That helps everyone to be at their best and move the ball.”

What did you learn from the event?
Mervine:
“I learned some new drills which I could use to improve my game, especially on my low shots. I also learned some weak spots of concern, such as moving my feet. If I keep working on that with drills I learned, I think I can definitely improve my game.”

How does this event prepare you for the upcoming season?
Mervine:
“It gave me some new skills that I can work on, so by the time the season comes I can improve some of my skills”

What type of college are you looking to attend, athletically and academically?
Mervine:
“I ultimately would like to go Division I and I do have a list of schools together. But as a goalie I have to be realistic. I am interested in athletic training and sports medicine so mostly I am narrowing down my list to schools that offer programs in those areas.”
Cohen also answered these questions:

More MVP interviews:

Gabrielle Cohen, Mainland Regional (NJ), Nor’easter Lacrosse, 2018 Defense, Team Lions

How was the level of competition and what did you do to match that level?
Cohen:
“Being a freshman, it was a lot different. I have been playing rec (middle school) and club lacrosse, but since I do play club lacrosse at many tournaments I was used to that type of intensity. I am familiar with the more physical play and talented play from seniors and juniors and having to match it, I just took all the skills I have learned and told myself I could do it.”

What went well for you during the event?
Cohen: “I just had to talk and communicate with teammates, even through I did not know them. I had to open up and trust them, knowing I would have their back and they would have mine. Communication went well; we had the top goalie (Mervine) and she was amazing. She would tell me if my girl moved. The communication went so well and that’s one reason we went 5-1.”

What did you learn from the event?
Cohen:
“I learned a lot from the question-and-answer (seminar) with the college coaches. They taught us a lot about how the process works with recruiting and how such as when they can talk to us and when they can’t

How does this event prepare you for the upcoming season?
Cohen:
“It really prepared me because now I know what I am up against and the type of intensity you see from upperclassmen. I know what kind of effort i need to put out and how I need to interact with them so people can see how I can perform.”

What type of college are you looking to attend, athletically and academically?
Cohen:
“My dream college is Northwestern; I have watched them on TV and I love their academics. I would like to major in psychology and I also am interested in taking a language; something like Spanish would be cool.”

Kassidy Bresnahan, Courtney Hutchinson

Kassidy Bresnahan, South River High (MD), United East, 2017 Attack, Team Spiders

How was the level of competition and what did you do to match that level?

Brensahan: “The level of competition was difficult. There were a lot of good players from all over the U.S.”

What did you think you did well?

Brensahan: “I think I did well on just focusing on the game and not worrying about anything else.”

What went well for you during the event?
Bresnahan: “I learned a lot of great things from the event, especially from the drills with the college coaches. Learning how to make a quick jab step when making a move really helped me in the player games.”

How does this event prepare you for the upcoming season?
Bresnahan:
“Playing against the difficult competition is going to help me in the upcoming season because it gives me an edge on understanding the different levels of competition I will face this year.”

What type of college are you looking to attend, athletically and academically?
Bresnahan:
“I am looking at schools that are just as excelled in the classroom as they are on the field.”

Courtney Hutchinson, Milton High School (GA), Eagle Stix Atlanta, 2017 Midfield, Team Spiders

How was the level of competition and what did you do to match that level?
Hutchinson:
“It was definitely fierce during scrimmaging because it was indoors. You had to work with the people around you. It was great competition and good to work with girls from up north.”

What went well for you during the event?
Hutchinson:
“I think it helps to always look up and see all over the field. I used my speed to get back on defense and get to attack and push the game.”

What did you learn from the event?
Hutchinson:
“The skill sessions helped me enhance my defense; I am a midfielder but that was something important. There were a lot of stick skills and dodging drills that helped to improve my skills. I think there were five stations and we got to work on dodging, shooting, defense around the crease, stick skills, man-up and man-down, working in confined space.”

How does this event prepare you for the upcoming season?
Hutchinson:
“It definitely gave me a chance to work with girls that had good developed skills and during scrimmaging we played good competition that will prepare me for tryouts and to go against the best.”

What type of college are you looking to attend, athletically and academically?
Hutchinson:
“I am looking for a D1 school and I definitely think it’s important to go to college for academics. I want to go into phjysical therapy or athletic training so I am looking for something to major to lead me in that direction. I think it’s also important to academically have support to get there.”

Alexandra Di Chiara, Plainedge High School (NY) Yellow Jackets, 2017 Blue, 2017 Attack, Team Colonials

How was the level of competition and what did you do to match that level?
Di Chiara:
“The competition was really good. It’s better to see girls from different states than just from Long Island. But I fought hard; us Yellow Jackets take on whichever people we get.”

What went well for you during the event?
Di Chiara:
“I definitely was taking it to the cage more. A lot of my game is feeding, but I worked more on shooting and taking it to the cage.”

What did you learn from the event?
Di Chiara:
“The drill sessions in the beginning were really good and had skills you could incorporate, like changing speed and shooting in different places.”

How does this event prepare you for the upcoming season?
Di Chiara:
“It definitely built my confidence up, knowing I could take on competition from all over.”

What type of college are you looking to attend, athletically and academically?
Di Chiara:
“I am definitely looking for a high academic school with really good athletics. I am working hard and I want to go to a high lacrosse school as well.”

Erin Phillips, Episcopal High (VA), Capital Blue 2018, Defense, Team Explorers

Erin Phillips

Erin Phillips

How was the level of competition and what did you do to match that level?
Phillips:
“The camp provided me with a new kind of competition. I was competing with and against 2018’s, 2017’s and 2016’s with all different skill and game levels. During the showcase games, I was put as a defender but when my team needed me I was able to work the midfield. The competition forced me to not only work hard on defense but also on clears and in the attacking end.”

What went well for you during the event?
Phillips:
“I think I challenged myself as an attacker more than I have ever before.”

What did you learn from the event?
Phillips:
“At Frozen 150, I became a better shooter and dodger. The college coaches at the event taught and reiterated key skills of the game.”

How does this event prepare you for the upcoming season?
Phillips:
“This prepared me mentally for the upcoming season. Through my time on offense I started to gain the confidence and strength to work the ball past the restraining line and into the offense end. This will allow me to work more of the field this upcoming season as a freshman at Episcopal High School.”

What type of college are you looking to attend, athletically and academically?
Phillips:
“I am looking for a college that will push me to my full potential as a student and a women’s lacrosse player. I hope to play Division 1 lacrosse so that I can compete against the strongest and most skilled players in the country.”
