Red Hook High School (NY) 2015 goalie Shelby Wilcox has made a commitment to play Division III lacrosse at the College of Wooster.
Shelby Wilcox ledger:
High School: Red Hook High School, NY
Graduation Year: 2015
Position: Goalie
College Choice: College of Wooster
Club Affiliation: Dutchess Monarchs
Lacrosse Honors: Section 9 Class C champions 2013,2014, Poughkeepsie Journal All-Star 2014, Section 9 2nd Team All-Star 2014
Academic Honors: National Honor Society, High Honor Roll, New York State Scholar Athlete Team
What will you major in/study? Communication Sciences and Disorders
Why did you choose Wooster? “The coach at the College of Wooster was actually the first coach to contact me after deciding to play in college. I went on several visits to other schools, but once I visited Wooster in the summer I knew it was somewhere I could see myself going. I visited again in the fall, and that’s what sealed the deal for me. The people are all so friendly, the girl I stayed with on the team instantly became a friend to me (along with her roommate), and both helped me when I was still deciding between schools.
“The school is beautiful and has a terrific atmosphere, along with the fact they have great opportunities for me academically. Not a lot of schools offer women’s lacrosse and my major of Communication Sciences and Disorders, plus the fact they have a clinic on campus where undergraduate students can obtain clinical hours, seems like it will be the perfect opportunity for me to excel as a student.
“Athletically, it has opportunities for me to succeed which makes Wooster a perfect fit for me, and I’m beyond excited to work with Coach (Elizabeth) Ford over the next four years.”
HS team’s Outlook for 2015 HS season? “We have big shoes to fill. Last year we went undefeated until loosing in the state play offs. I’m excited for what the season will bring, but we’ll have to work 100% at every practice and game to achieve what we did last year. We’re losing five starting seniors, but we’re returning a great bunch of players, so I believe as long as we work together and push ourselves, we should have another great season.”
Thank You: “I’d like to thank one of my best friends Becky Nesel. She’s the one that convinced me to play lacrosse sophomore year, and without her I would never have picked up a stick to begin with.
“I’d also like to thank my school coach, Yvonne Turchetti. She has made me into the player I am today and has done so much for me these past few years. Along with Yvonne, I’d like to thank my club coaches, Jesse Nunn, Michael Lowell, and Dan Schmitt. They’ve worked so much with me in the summer and fall and I can’t thank them enough.
“Finally, I’d like to thank my parents. My parents have always supported me in my decisions and helped me become the person I am today. I think they were a little surprised when I started to favor lacrosse over soccer, but they’ve always supported my choices. They’ve done so much for me involving my athletic career and I’ll never be able to thank them enough.”
Other schools considered: Springfield College, Southern Connecticut State University, SUNY Fredonia, University of Redlands
