Matt Vetter (Central Bucks East) scored three goals and had an assist and the defense allowed one goal for the final 32 minutes as Twist Black 2015 defeated the Checkmate Sharks from Long Island 8-3 in the championship game of the Tri-State National Summer Lacrosse Festival Sunday afternoon at Mercer County Community College.

Twist reached the final when Michael Major (Holy Ghost Prep) scored four goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 5-4 win over the Duke’s L.C. in the semifinals.
Twist, who had reached the Rising Sophomore AA semifinals two years ago and Rising Junior AA championship game a year ago, fell behind the Sharks 2-0 in the first four minutes before tying the final 3-3 at the half and then breaking it open after that. Ben Bala (The Hill School) broke the tie early in the second half to start the run, and Nolan Little (Downingtown East) won
6 of 9 face-offs in the game to control possession.
The real drama came in the semifinal, when Major¹s ended a tight game between Twist and the defending champion Dukes, who had been undefeated for the weekend prior to the semifinal.
Twist had leads of 2-0 and 4-2 against the Dukes, who rallied to tie it at 2-2 just before intermission and then 4-4 late in regulation. The Dukes had two shots in the final 10 seconds of regulation, but Ian Davies (Germantown Academy) made two tough low saves to force overtime. Davies then caused a turnover in the OT when he stepped out of the cage to intercept a pass,
giving Twist possession.
After the clear, Vetter fed Major near the top of the box, and Major ripped a shot that clanged off the pipe and into the goal.
Twist lost its opener in pool play to Tri-State Gold but then won four straight, including a 6-4 win over the Sharks – to finish second in its division. Twist won its quarterfinal game against Tri-State Silver 10-0 in a game in which Little and Jack Auteri (Central Bucks East) combined to go 12 for 12 facing off.
While Twist knocked off the Dukes in one semifinal, the Sharks defeated Tri-State Gold 6-5 in the other.
Major led Twist in the tournament with 14 goals and was second with 17 points. Vetter had a team-best 18 points (10G, 8A), while Connor Howell (Wilson West Lawn) had six goals and nine assists for 15 points.
The Twist defense was incredible throughout as it surrendered just 23 goals in eight games, or fewer than three per game. Jackson Ehlert (Exeter HS) had seven caused turnovers and led the longsticks with 13 ground balls, while Nick Lawlor (Springside Chestnut Hill) had a team-best nine caused turnovers. Goalies Davies and Greg Price (Holy Ghost Prep) combined to make 45 saves while allowing 23 goals, for a .662 save percentage.
Little led the team with 19 ground balls and won 24 of 38 face-offs (.632).
