WEST ISLIP, N.Y. – Allie Pavinelli collected four goals and two assists and Dorrien Van Dyke added four goals and an assist as seventh-seeded Northport surprised second-seeded West Islip, 12-9, today in a Suffolk County Class A quarterfinal.

The Tigers (13-5) advance to play at third-seeded Ward Melville Wednesday in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Ward Melville (13-4) downed Half Hollow Hills, 10-7.

“We knew coming into this we had our work cut out for us but we were ready for the challenge,” said Northport head coach Carol Rose. “They have taken on a new mantra to believe in themselves and to never give up.

“I know West Islip is a good team. They are fast and very athletic but we worked together as a team and were able to pull out the win.”

Northport turned a 6-2 deficit into an 8-6 lead in the second half. West Islip lost Cara Douglas for the game when she got her second yellow card with 23:32 left in the second half.

“We just did not want to lose,” said senior Cortney Fortunato (two goals). “We have a lot of seniors with a lot of experience so we just came together and didn’t want this to be our last game.

“We are on a mission so we just turned it around and didn’t let their lead get to us.”

West Islip was able to pull within one goal but Northport refused to give up the lead. Van Dyke’s third goal with 8:59 remaining in the game sparked a 3-0 run, putting the Tigers back up by four.

Kristen Brunoforte made eight saves to earn the win.

Pavinelli said she shook off an injury.

“I wasn’t able to start the game because I’m hurt, but when coach put me I knew I did not want this to be the end of the season,” said Pavinelli. “We were down by two and knew we could make a comeback because we were able to make a comeback on them during the season.

“We are trying to get back to states again and it’s one step at a time from here.”

For West Islip 914-3), Ruthann Dooling grabbed nine saves, Lindsay Darrell had three goals and Vanessa Costantino had two goals for West Islip.

“They out played us in the second half and their goalie stepped up and had a couple big saves,” said West Islip head coach Joe Nicolosi. “In the first half we out played them. It’s just different halves.
