SOUTH HUNTINGTON,N.Y. – Eamon Campbell scored off a pass from Greg Galligan with 2:50 remaining today in overtime to give host St. Anthony’s an 11-10 victory over visiting Fairfield Prep (CT).
The win improved the Friars – No. 20 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits Rankings – to 10-3 as they gear for a key Catholic High School contest Thursday with Chaminade. Fairfield Prep fell to 6-3.
“This was a tough game,” said Campbell. “We came out a little flat but we settled on offense and picked up our defense.
“It feels great to get the game winning goal. I told Greg to shoot it but he passed it to me instead and I didn’t think about it. I just shot it and it went in. This will help us out a lot with the tougher games we have coming up.”
Jack O’Connor grabbed 10 saves in the first half to help the Jesuits seize a 7-3 lead. But the Friars soon tied the game, 8-8, on a 4-0 run.
Teddy Long scored with 5:50 remaining in the game to put Fairfield Prep up 9-8, but St. Anthony’s answered with a goal by Connor Byrne off a pass from Michael Laviano with 4:01 remaining. With 1:38 to play Austin Sims gave Fairfield Prep the lead off a pass from Burke Smith.
Joseph Liccardi scored the tying goal off a pass from JT Caputo with 54 seconds remaining in regulation.
Brendan Homire tallied three goals, Connor Byrne tallied two goals and one assist and Laviano tallied one goal and two assists for St. Anthony’s.
“I think we grinded it out,” said St. Anthony’s coach Keith Wieczorek. “They outplayed us and probably deserved the win for a good half of that game, but we grinded it out and did what we had to do.
“Some of us might have been looking ahead to Thursday already, but we got through it. This was a good character check for us. I felt great about our team going into today and I feel great about them now. We had some big lapses today but we were able to overcome it.”
O’Connor grabbed 17 saves, Austin Sims and Cam Harris both tallied two goals and two assists for Fairfield Prep.
“This was a great high school athletic contest,” said Fairfield Prep coach Chris Smalkais. “It was good to be a part of something like this and it is unfortunate that in these games someone has to lose.”
