HAVERFORD, Pa. – It was an impressive victory for host Haverford School Saturday when it blitzed La Costa Canyon (CA), 19-4.
But the Fords had a lot more to play for than a seven-game win streak when it hosted the annual Checking for Cancer Invitational.

The 10-game event – which featured five boys’ games and five more girls’ games at nearby Agnes Irwin – was co-founded by the Fords’ coach John Nostrant, a prostate cancer survivor. It has raised $200,000 to fight men’s cancers (testicular, prostate, colorectal) and focuses on early detection through education.
The Fords (9-2) also dedicated the game to teammate Kip Taviano, who died in a car accident shortly before graduation last year, as well as those lost in the past year to cancer.
Junior attackman Grant Ament (Penn State) had three goals and three assists to earn his team’s MVP award. Haverford raced to a 14-2 halftime lead and then emptied its bench against a La Costa Canyon (7-4) team that was finishing a long eastern trip that included games vs. Georgetown Prep (MD) and Salesianum School (DE).
“We were all here early this morning, and we were lucky enough to have a donor give us new helmets,” said Ament. “We knew we had to play for that donor, for Kip and to honor others that have passed in the last year. That’s what we focused on.”
Senior attackman Jared Maffucci (two goals) was named the Mavericks’ MVP.
Ament said his team is beginning to jell, even despite injuries to senior captains Peter Blynn (midfielder, out for year with knee injury) and Connor Keating (defenseman/LSM, hoping to return soon from knee injury).
“We’re luckily starting to click; we have so much talent on this team it’s crazy,” said Ament. “We were focusing on defense and I think everyone stepped up. On offense, we were consistent in getting the job done.”
Garden City 4, Bronxville 2
Senior goalie Dan Dolan (UMass) had seven saves and was named MVP and freshman JP Basile had the game-winner late in the third period and also the insurance goal to lift the Trojans (6-1).
The Broncos (3-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but Garden City’s defense of Matt Borges, Cullen Minion, Tom Wright and Brian Colamussi as well as defensive middie Tim McDonagh shut the door.
“The event is awesome,” said Dolan, whose team went to Checking for Cancer two years ago and knocked off No. 1 Conestoga. “Coach (Steve Finnell) said that cancer affects everyone so we all played for someone.
“We had to settle down; we were antsy and nervous, but we started playing defense and talking. We came together well; the ‘D’ did an awesome job and made it easy for me.
Bronxville sophomore goalie Andrew Harwood (12 saves) was named his team’s MVP.
“Teams were playing some of the best squads in the country,” said Harwood. “It was neat to see kids from California coming out. It was tough to get the loss, but it was a great experience.”
