Alex Roesner and Ryan Conrad each had three goals and two assists as Loyola Blakefield (MD) stunned St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 14-5 Friday night in a special Baltimore-Long Island showcase game played at Penn’s historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

The game between the defending MIAA champion Dons and the perennial Long Island Catholic power St. Anthony’s was played under the lights before a spirited crowd to allow the teams to meet at a halfway point on the large stage.

St. Anthony’s, ranked No. 6 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits rankings, was making its season opener. Loyola is 2-2, having lost to Philly Inter-Ac League powers Haverford School and Malvern Prep.

“Franklin Field’s stadium is so huge that no crowd looks big, but it was sizable,” said Loyola coach Jack Crawford. “They are athletic and very good and we didn’t have a scouting report – in fact we haven’t had a scouting report on any of the four teams we played since they all were playing in their first games of the season.

“I would say that our ball movement was much better than it had been the last two games. We did a much better job of finishing and our time of possession was very good.

“Defensively, our on and off ball play was strong and our face-off man (Brown commit Chris Anderson) played very well.”

Pickett Riehl scored twice and Acie Newton made eight saves for Loyola. Brendan Homire had two goals for St. Anthony’s.

“We play a brutal schedule and we do that on purpose,” said Crawford. “It’s the only way to get a line on our strengths and weaknesses and to help us prepare for the MIAA season.”
