The Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.) school board has announced the hiring of Justin Arini as the replacement for longtime mentor Tom Rotanz.
Arini, 28, a former assistant at NYIT and Manhattan College who played goalie at Long Island power Ward Melville, was accepted as the coach at a school board meeting Tuesday.
Rotanz was told at a recent school board that his contract would not be renewed after a highly successful career. He led SWR to the last two Long Island Class C championships, compiled an overall 238-97 record (.710 winning pct.) with 10 Suffolk County Lacrosse Championships, five Long Island Championships and three New York State Championships (2002, 2007, & 2012).
Shoreham-Wading River is the preseason No. 1 seed in Suffolk County’s Division II for the upcoming spring season. On Long Island all teams are seeded before schedules are prepared.
Arini was an assistant coach last spring at Huntington (N.Y.). Before that, Arini had been an assistant men’s lacrosse coach at New York Tech and Manhattan College. He played goalie in college for Alfred State.
Shoreham-Wading River superintendent Steven Cohen had announced in the fall that Rotanz’s contract would not be renewed. Rotanz supporters had spoken at meetings prior to the announcement in hopes of overturning Cohen’s recommendation. No reason for his ouster was given.
Arini was hired as recruiting coordinator and to coach the offense at Manhattan in 2007 after coaching at NYIT and later Bergen Catholic (N.J.). Arini began his coaching career in 2006 as the assistant coach at Hanover Park High School in East Hanover, N.J.
Arini played his high school lacrosse under legendary Ward Melville coach Jim Cuozzo. At Alfred State (Juco), he started every game in goal over his two year career, helping lead his team to consecutive playoffs appearances.
For his goalie efforts at Alfred State, Arini was named team captain and awarded with Team MVP honors in 2005. He was also named to the All-Conference team both years and was the only goalie selected to the Region III All- Tournament team.
