Coach Kevin Martin knew his Sweetlax (N.Y.) team had the talent to win the Elite Division title last week at the Dick’s Tournament of Champions at Wesley Chapel, Fla.

And once his squad began to mesh, there was little to stand in its way.
Sweetlax used a 7-1 run to break open a tight game and coasted to a 12-7 victory last Tuesday over the Road Warriors (N.C.) in the championship game.
Sweetlax went undefeated in the tourney, finishing 7-0. But it started off with three one-goal wins, over Florida Elite (5-4), Northern Lacrosse-Ontario (6-5) and Copperhead-ATL (3-2).
Sweetlax was comprised of its normal pool of Upstate New York players, but also featured several Canadian and Iroquois players as well as others from Florida, New Jersey, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maryland.

Troy Lauder, a 2016 Iroquois midfielder, was awarded the championship game MVP award. Goalie Willie Klan (Webster Schroeder, N.Y./Ohio State commit) and FOGO Max Parker (Lake Highland Prep/Syracuse commit) also were standouts.
“We had lots of talent,” said Sweetlax coach Kevin Martin. “We put in a new offense and some of them got frustrated, but once they meshed they really got on a roll.
“We had a great attack with all Canadian kids. They finished the ball. The defense was clicking and our goalie, Willie Klan, made the big save every time we needed it.”
