From Press Release

This is the time of year for major college football bowl games. Of interest to the lacrosse enthusiast this weekend is the Brogden Cup International Field Lacrosse competition between the USA and Canada.

The top lacrosse players from the USA and Canada will unite in Oshawa, Ontario for the Brogden Cup, an historical three-day lacrosse series organized by Level 2 Sports that promotes international fellowship between the two countries. The USA roster is set for the competition January 3-5 at the Oshawa Civic Field House.

The USA team is represented by players that participated in the 2013 Brine National Lacrosse Classic Championship Game between New Jersey-North (champion) and Long Island (runner-up).

The team will be coached by Tony Calandra, Chatham High School, New Jersey IAA State Champions and Brine ’13 National Champion. To secure roster spots in this national lacrosse forum, high school student athletes participated in regional tryouts sponsored by Brine Lacrosse that were held across the country throughout the year.

Representing Canada in the Brogden Cup is Team Ontario, a provincial team featuring the top 23 players selected from more than 100 area athletes over a two-weekend tryout. Team Ontario won the First Nations U19 Canadian Championships in Montreal.

This is the first time in six years that the Brogden Cup will be held on Canadian soil, having been hosted in Florida since 2009. It is naturally a much-anticipated event for Canadian lacrosse enthusiasts.

“Any time the US and Canada play lacrosse, the games are competitive,” said Terry Lloyd, a Canadian Hall of Fame inductee and one of the finest athletes and builders of box and field lacrosse in Oshawa. “I would not expect anything different for the 2014 Brogden Cup.”

History of Brogden Cup

The best of three-game series is named for H. McCullough Brogden, who was a member of the 1932 and 1933 Johns Hopkins University teams and the 1932 Olympic team.

Dating back a generation before Major League Lacrosse, the Brogden Cup was formally played between the top post-collegiate club players in North America. Today, the Brogden Cup feature the top U19 players in North America enabling those unable to participate in the World Games (every four years), due to unfortunate birth dates, and opportunity to experience international field lacrosse and fellowship every year.

Level 2 Sports is the organizer of this event. Having demonstrated a high level of potential and love for the game, the USA roster features college-bound players that have participated in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.

About the Brine National Lacrosse Classic

A benchmark for youth and high school lacrosse in the United States, the Brine National Lacrosse Classic is an annual showcase event featuring premier players and coaches from across the country that were selected to participate based on skills and sportsmanship demonstrated in regional tryouts. The three-day event offers players the unique opportunity to represent their regions in an extremely competitive arena, demonstrate their talents in front of NCAA collegiate lacrosse coaches from every division, and enjoy a socially and athletically rewarding experience that will help them meet the challenges of high school and college academics and athletics. The Brine National Lacrosse Classic has three distinct divisions for high school and middle school boys and girls based on their graduation year, and is designed to help players maximize their potential.
