MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – The Metro New York girls’ high school team may be slightly unconventional.
The squad is one of the youngest in the field with half of its players being 2020s and the girls come from a mix of locations, including Long Island, North and South Jersey and counties north of Manhattan. One is from Florida.

But Team Metro is one of four teams (along with Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland) that went 4-0 in Pool Play and stamped itself as a contender to win a championship here at the River City Sportsplex. Metro NY will face Upstate NY at 8 a.m. on Field 5 in the quarterfinals.
Three of the Metro NY players – 2019 goalie Marissa Cuevas (Sachem East-NY), 2020 defender Kaitlyn Skumas (Ramapo-NJ) and 2020 midfielder Kelsey McDonnell (Yorktown-NY) earned All-Star selection and fared well for the National team in a 6-5 loss. McDonnell had three goals and Cuevas had five saves and yielded just two goals in the second half when the National team almost rallied from a 6-0 deficit. Skamas showed incredible speed on her clears and set up McDonnell for one score.
The threesome gave these comments:
Marissa Cuevas
On Metro NY’s success: “We have good ball movement. We know where to pass and just play together like we have been playing forever – but we really just met each other.
On the All-Star Game: “In the beginning it was tough, but we came off at halftime and we said need to be patient and not make sloppy passes. We had to go to X and move the ball around, and it worked out pretty well in the second half.”
On her college outlook: “Really I am just exploring my options I know I want to go away, anywhere.”
Kaitlyn Skamas
On Metro NY’s success: “I think we jelled together pretty well. We are all unselfish and we move the ball very well. We don’t care who scores as long as we get it done. I definitely think we can (win it all).”
On the All-Star Game: “I think it was really fun. We had a good time even though we lost, playing with players we never played with before from different states.”
On her college outlook: “I am looking at variety of schools, a couple from different leagues. I am going to camps and seeing what I like.”
Kelsey McDonnell
On Metro NY’s success: “I think we’re really scrappy and we end up coming up with it. If it’s a ping pong, game back and fourth, we end up finding the heart and come out with the win. We are undefeated; it’s awesome. I hope we can go all the way.”
On the All-Star Game: “Even though we didn’t win, we came back from a little bit of a gap. The girls jelled together.”
On her college outlook: “I’m pretty far into it. I am looking at a lot of school. I am not sure exactly what I want, but I want to play very competitive lacrosse. I will visit schools and and keep my options.”
