TABERNACLE, N.J. – After bowing in the 2019 championship game each of the past two years at the Girls’ Summer Slam, Black Dog closed its travel season in style today.

Black Dog wins the 2019 championship at the Girls’ Summer Slam

Black Dog built a four-goal lead and hung on to defeat the Duchess Monarchs, 5-4, in the 2019 title game at the annual Victory Events tourney at Seneca High School.

“Some of our players are going to a beach tournament,” Black Dogs head coach Hudson said. “But this is the last tournament for the most part. It was absolutely fantastic to win it. We have literally lost this tournament twice in a row. Third time’s a charm, right?”

On Saturday, in the third game, these two teams also faced each other. In that one, the Monarchs (from the Hudson Valley, NY) rolled to a 12-4 win. Today’s game was different.

“We had a great first half and we were up by one at the half,” Hudson said. “Then, in the second half, we came out slow and then our goalie got hurt. We just weren’t playing our game in the second half.

“Today, for this championship game, I switched up my draw control players. I had my tallest girl take the draws instead of my shorter players.”

Black Dog jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Emma Randisi (Spring Grove) kicked off the scoring, then her teammates Madison Kurland (Central York) and Abby McFerren (Central York) also scored.

Caroline D’Agostino (Lourdes) scored the lone first-half goal for the Monarchs.

“We just knew we needed to come here and win,” Hudson said. “We have been talking about this tournament all summer. I was telling our players, ‘Make sure you’re on it. The Summer Slam is our last tournament together.’

“I believe we did that – and we kept getting better every week. We had our A players on the field when it was time to score.”

Ana Plastina (Mechanicsburg) improved the Black Dogs lead to 5-1 after halftime with back-to-back goals. The Monarchs made a late rally that fell short.

“It felt good to help out any way possible,” Plastina said. “And it feels very cool to win.”
