STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Mt. Sinai raced to a 7-3 halftime lead and held on for a 7-5 victory today over Cold Spring Harbor in the Class C Long Island Championship at Stony Brook University.
Camryn Harloff (two goals) and Rayna Sabella (one goal, one assist) led a balanced attack as the Section 11 and defending state champion Mustangs (16-3) advanced to face Section 5 champ Honeoye Falls-Lima in the state semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Red Field at Cortland.
“We knew we had to come out so strong today,” said Sebella. “From last year we knew that they were going to come out as strong as possible because they wanted to win so badly. So we knew we had to come out strong and keep up the tempo the entire time. We feel amazing.
Mt. Sinai started off hot going up 5-1 by the 10:51 mark of the first half. CSH scored early in the second half, but then the Mustangs’ defense and goalie Hannah Van Middelem (five saves) took over.
Mt. Sinai was coming off a big momentum win, a 6-5 victory over previously undefeated Bayport-Blue Point in the Suffolk County title game.
“We got out to a fast start,” said Mount Sinai head coach Al Bertolone. “If there was any worry about a letdown after Bayport it kinda jacked us up a little bit. We turned around and got involved and we jumped out quick.
“Then we got involved in a very physical game back and forth. The heart and soul of our team is our defense. That was a (good) offensive team and we held them to five and they got three of them on an extra man. I think we are a very good defensive team. We preach defense. Defense wins championships.”
The Mustangs – who have won nine in a row since losing three out of five games at midseason – will look to win their third state title in four years at Cortland.
“It feels good to get back up state with this group,” said Bertolone. “This group went through a lot of adversity. They’ve won a lot of close games. We played a very tough schedule and we survived.”
“Everybody doubted us and we knew we had to prove everybody wrong,” said Sebella. “That was our motto this whole year; so that is what we did and now we are going back upstate. We are going to try and get another state championship.”
Abbey Ngai grabbed nine saves and Ashley Lynch tallied one goal and two assists for Cold Spring Harbor (12-6).
“We didn’t play well enough to win,” said Cold Spring Harbor head coach Danielle Castellane. “We didn’t have our normal people take as many shots as we would’ve liked.
“We definitely started off, defensively, in a little bit of a slump. We definitely had an outstanding second half, holding them scoreless. Our goalie really stepped up. I think we played scared to loose, we didn’t play to win.”
