BETHPAGE, N.Y. – Kerry Defliese’s only goal of the game with 29.2 seconds remaining lifted Garden City to a 9-8 victory over Manhasset in the Nassau County Class B championship today at Bethpage High School.

The win moves the Trojans (18-1, ranked No. 3 in STEPS Lacrosse Rankings) into Sunday’s Long Island championship vs. Eastport South Manor at Stony Brook University.
“This was definitely an intense game,” said Defliese. “We played them earlier in the season and it was a tight game (9-8 overtime win) just like that. We knew we had to come out strong and hard just like we have always done.
“It was a little nerve wracking when they tied it. I had trust in my teammates that they would get the ball. Get draw controls, get ground balls and finish. I’m really excited. We haven’t been here in a while, so it is just an amazing feeling just to come back and start over again.”
The Trojans led, 7-4, but Rory Quinn (three goals) scored two for the Indians (13-4-1) to make it 7-6. Jackie Brattan put Garden City up 8-6 at the 8:29 mark, but Quinn scored again and Collette Murray (two goals, one assist) tied it with 4:15 left.
Michaela Bruno tallied three goals and one assist and Jackie Brattan tallied three goals for Garden City.
“We knew coming in what a fantastic team they were,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman. “We knew it was going to be back and forth. Yes we went up but we knew we could never be satisfied with that against a team like this.

“Every time we would get a lead they just kept coming back. It was just a great game and it could have gone either way. I’m just really proud of the girls. We haven’t been here in a couple of years. I’m just so proud of them, County champs now everything is a bonus.”
Krissy Kowalski had 10 saves for Manhasset.
