The Trojans (14-5) won their 11th straight game and will meet the Suffolk County champion, Sayville or Shoreham-Wading River, for the Long Island title on Saturday at Hofstra.

“This is the best game I ever played in,” said Basile, a junior attackman committed to Duke. “I couldn’t be more proud of my six seniors. They did a great job.

“We were down 5-1 and Coach (Steve) Finnell got us to start running some new things at the X and it all worked out. I think we have a good chance at winning everything.”

Manhasset held a 4-0 lead midway through the third quarter. Garden City finally scored on a goal by Kyle Steinbach, but the Indians (15-4) closed out the third quarter with a goal by Matt Gavin.

In the fourth quarter Garden City responded.

Basile scored his first goal with 10:15 left and added two more goals Steinbach tallied two goals and two assists in the run. Sam Lucchesi grabbed 11 saves for Garden City.
“The kids just refused to quit,” said Finnell. “We were down 3-0 and then 5-1 going into the fourth; it didn’t look like we had much in the tank. JP got us started. Sam Lucchesi and the defense were unbelievable.

“It could have been 6-0, 7-0 at half and we would have been done, but we hung in there. I told the kids to try and relax. It was just so hard to get the first goal. Sometimes it just opens up a little bit after that. I don’t know how to describe it but this group of kids has ‘it’. Whatever ‘it’ is and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it before in a high school team. We might have had more talented teams on paper but these guys are special. They are playing hard and for each other.”

Matt Gavin tallied two goals and Jack Keogh tallied one goal and one assist for Manhasset.

“We did everything we wanted to do for three quarters,” said Manhasset head coach Bill Cherry. “I told them with 12 minutes to go to just play their hearts out. Then Garden City got their first goal and we just couldn’t stop it. You have to give them a lot of credit.”
