HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Will Sands tallied three goals and four assists and goalie Chre Teitelbaum earned MVP honors with 10 saves as Friends Academy defeated Cold Spring Harbor, 9-4, today at Hofstra University to gain its first Nassau County Class C boys’ lacrosse Championship.

“Any time you get a County Championship it is special in its own right,” said Friends Academy head coach Brian Crocco. “Our boys were equally happy about playing against a terrific team in Cold Spring Harbor.

“To get a win against them which hasn’t happened in a long time felt really good. This is a testament to the work we put in during the season.”

Friends Academy (14-2) advances to play defending state champion Shoreham-Wading River (17-1) in the Long Island championship Saturday at Hofstra (4:30 p.m.). SWR handled Bayport-Blue Point, 18-6, for the Suffolk County crown.

Friends Academy trailed, 4-3, in the third quarter before embarking on a 6-0 run to end the game. The go-ahead goal came from Pierce DellaFera on a pass from Will Sands late in the third quarter.

“This is the greatest experience of my life,” said Sands. “Our motto all season is to play in June, something Friends Academy has never done.

“We have never won the Nassau County Championship and to play in June you have to win that. I’m proud of my teammates because we are the first team to win this.”

Cold Spring Harbor (13-4) defeated Friends Academy in last year’s Nassau County final. The Seahawks also bested the Quakers, 12-7, three weeks ago.

“After our goal at the end of the third quarter we got the momentum,” said Teitelbaum. “We started getting our looks, getting our stops and most importantly we were getting the ball.

“That was something we didn’t do in the first game against them. I’m happy we get to keep playing.”

Ryan Winkoff tallied two goals and Allen Winkoff and Ryan Tassan had one goal for Cold Spring Harbor.

“Friends Academy out played us,” said Cold Spring Harbor head coach Dennis Bonn. “Their goalie played outstanding and that was the difference in this game.

“Friends is a class act. Brian Brocco does a great job and I’m happy for them.”
