Senior captains Kasey Mitchell and Sydney Pirreca said the disappointment of an early exit in last year’s post-season served as extra fuel for the Mt. Sinai girls’ lacrosse team in 2015.
The Mustangs (20-1) defeated Honeoye-Falls Lima, 8-5, Saturday at Vestal High to win the NY Class C state title for the second time in three years. Last year Mt. Sinaisuffered its only loss in the Suffolk County finals.
“This win is the sweetest of them all,” said Pirreca, the game’s MVP with three goals and an assist. “It is my, along with the other seniors last ‘hoorah’ as a Mount Sinai senior. It definitely makes it a little easier to leave this team now that we finally got a state championship again.
“Especially after the loss of last year. That was a real heartbreaker for us. It was very unexpected. Looking back on it now, I can only be thankful for that loss. Without that loss I’m not sure we would have the same fire and motivation we had this year. We really took that loss to heart especially for our seniors of last year. I think that we worked very hard to get back to the top and I couldn’t be more proud of my team for getting here again.”
Mitchell, who had four goals, said that loss to Bayport-Blue Point was felt hard.
“Last year was 100% our motivation to win this year,” she said. “Being a senior this year I wanted to go out a winner and with the help of my team and coaches I was able to do that. Losing last year really opened our eyes and realized that it was possible for us to lose. So, this year we never underestimated anyone. We acted as if each game was a big game and took it one game at a time.”
Mt. Sinai celebrates the NY Class C state championship
On Saturday Mt. Sinai took a 6-2 lead at halftime and never allowed the Section 5 champion Cougars (13-9) to really threaten.
“Today’s game plan was more about focusing on us rather than the opponent,” said Pirreca. “We obviously were aware of there key players and our defense adjusted to that, and did a great job doing it. I think it was more about our game plan. Being able to focus on ourselves and doing our thing, rather than getting all caught up in the opponents style of play.”
The Mustangs had to win some key games to win the Long Island championship – avenging Bayport-Blue Point, 7-4, and then winning a monumental four-overtime marathon, 10-9, over Cold Spring Harbor before thumping defending state champ Skaneateles, 13-7, in the semis.
“It’s an amazing accomplishment,” said Pirreca of the state title. “Especially after going into quadruple over time against Cold Spring Harbor. It’s definitely been a tough journey to make our way to the top, but it feels amazing and accomplishing to finally get the outcome we wanted.”
“I mean getting here was definitely a struggle,” added Mitchell. “We’ve worked so hard and so long just for the opportunity and we took full advantage of it. I couldn’t be any happier to win this big of a game with the girls and coaches on this team.”
