HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Tyler Dunn tallied three goals to boost Manhasset to a 9-6 victory over Lynbrook Tuesday for the Nassau County Class B boys’ lacrosse championship at Hofstra University.
The Indians (14-5) advance to play the Suffolk County champion, Mt. Sinai or Sayville, at 6 p.m. Saturday at Stony Brook University.

Manhasset fell, 8-6, to top-seeded Lynbrook, the No. 20 team, in the Epoch Lacrosse North America Rankings, earlier this year. The Chiefs also fell, 8-4, to Lynbrook in last year’s county finals.

“We just wanted to execute on both offense and defense,” said Dunn. “I feel like we did that. We really wanted to shut down their attack and I feel we did that. Offensively we had minimal turnovers so we were really psyched about that.

“We feel great. We feel accomplished that we finally get to win a county championship. I’ve never won a county championship. We’ve made it to the finals every year. This is our first year winning this and it is a great feeling.”

Manhasset used a goal by Logan Dunn to spark a 6-0 run that opened an 8-2 lead in the fourth period. Lynbrook made a 4-0 run in the final quarter but could not pull closer than 8-6.

Jack Miller tallied two goals and one assist and Matthew Gavin tallied two goals for Manhasset.

“I thought our kids played so hard,” said Manhasset head coach Bill Cherry. “Lynbrook got it to 2-2 and we answered with a goal going into half 3-2. I just told them at half that if they want it this is the quarter they had to take it and they did.

“They were more patient. They played as a team. Our defense stepped up huge. Lynbrook is so well coached. My kids played tremendous.”

Michael Toy tallied two goals and one assist and Brendan McDougal grabbed nine saves for Lynbrook.

“We ran into a tough well coached team,” said Lynbrook head coach Bill Leighley. “They obviously came prepared today. It was one of the toughest lacrosse games I’ve ever seen. Both teams played tough and they just played better than us today.”
